Santiago may not be a world-class shopping destination, but you can still pick up interesting craft pieces and unusual clothing or housewares by young local designers. The Centro's busiest shopping streets, pedestrianized Ahumada and Huérfanos, are lined with cheap clothing, shoe and department stores. For seriously cheap clothes, head to the Korean and Palestinian immigrant area of Patronato, west of Bellavista between Patronato and Manzano. Secondhand clothes stores abound in the city (often marked by signs reading 'Ropa Europea/Americana'), especially around Providencia's Manuel Montt metro station.
The top-quality Chilean crafts you can find in Santiago include hand-woven alpaca shawls, Mapuche silver jewelry, lapis lazuli, wood, leatherwork and, occasionally, copperware. Near the entrance to Cerro Santa Lucía, look for outdoor vendors at the indigenous-focused Centro de Exposición de Arte Indígena(MAPGOOGLE MAP; O'Higgins 499, Centro; icon-hoursgifh10am-6pm Mon-Sat; icon-metrogifmSanta Lucia) and the more commercial Centro Artesanal Santa Lucía(MAPGOOGLE MAP; cnr Carmen & Diagonal Paraguay, Centro; icon-hoursgifh10am-7pm; icon-metrogifmSanta Lucía).

Flea MarketMARKET
( GOOGLE MAP ; Franklin Market ; icon-hoursgif h 9am-7pm Sat & Sun ; icon-metrogif m Franklin )
Antiques, collectibles and fascinating old junk fill the cluttered stalls at this famous flea market between Bío Bío and Franklin. Sifting through the jumble of vintage sunglasses, antique brandy snifters, cowboy spurs, old-fashioned swimsuits and discarded books is an experience.
It's also a choice spot to try some Chilean street food, from fried empanadas, tacos and grilled pork sandwiches to fresh-squeezed juices and the classic mote con huesillo (a sweet local snack made with dried peaches and husked wheat). Just be sure to keep one hand on your valuables while stuffing food into your mouth; pickpockets have been known to prey on unsuspecting shoppers.
8Information
Dangers & Annoyances
Violent crime is relatively rare in Santiago, a city that is regularly ranked as the safest big city in Latin America. Pickpocketing and bag-snatching, however, are on the rise, and tourists are often targets. Keep your eyes open and your bags close to you around the Plaza de Armas, Mercado Central, Cerro Santa Lucía and Cerro San Cristóbal in particular. Look around you before whipping out a digital camera; be aware that organized groups of pickpockets sometimes target drinkers along Pío Nono in Bellavista. Barrio Brasil's smaller streets can be dodgy after dark. Political strife has taken the form of protests (which occassionally turn violent) and anarchist bombings in recent years. It's advisable to avoid political protests unless you are really part of the movement.
If you are robbed, head to the police department to fill out a report (and hopefully) have the goods covered by your travel insurance. Your consulate can also help, but rarely steps in when drugs are involved

Ir a Valparaiso a 40 min de Santiago Patrimonio de la Humanidad
